David Cartwright Wins June Handicap Tournament
David Cartwright, carrying nine official USCA bisques, defeated Martyn Selman 22-10 in the final of the first American rules handicap tournament of the SCCC season. Selman held two USCA bisques and thus gave Cartwright seven bisques for the final game.
Cartwright played extremely well and used his bisques wisely.
Selman went second and did the Chernobyl. Selman let him two ball it to 4, taking a couple of bisques. At that point, Cartwright gave Selman a chance allowing Selman into the game and he went to the peg. Selman left a good leave. Cartwright’s ball was a couple of feet from corner 4. Selman set the leave around hoop 2 – with two balls lined up in wired positions and the open ball about 2 feet from corner 2. Cartwright lagged up to the ball in corner 2 (from corner 4) and stopped within 2 yards. He used a bisque to roquet, and used another bisque to get his break going. He then proceeded with a 4 ball break to the peg. Selman said “I think he could have used one more bisque to revive his break, but he played the break pretty well. He did not peg me out, which I would have done had the boot been on the other foot.”
Cartwright left a long shot at his balls, which Selman missed by a fraction, so he set off on his second break with about 4 or 5 bisques in hand.
Cartwright lost concentration a bit, and used his last bisque at 4 back – at which point time expired. Selman report: “I think he should have kept going, but he stopped his break there. By the time I played my back ball, he was safely hiding on the boundaries, so there was little hope.”
In the semi-final game for third place Robert Coleman defeated Karen Collingwood 26-2.

Editorial comment by Mike Orgill:
Martyn Selman did an excellent job organizing the tournament. I think we should have many more of these handicap tournaments, both under association and American rules. Higher handicapped club members will learn much more about croquet strategy and the shot making skills they need to improve by playing under handicaps.
