In 2009 the Hayes Presidential Center organized a croquet club sanctioned by the United States Croquet Association. Golf Croquet and SuperSize Croquet tournaments are featured events in WINE, WICKETS & WHEELS, a major fundraiser being inaugurated for the Center and focusing on the Center’s traditional Fourth of July celebrations. WINE, WICKETS & WHEELS also includes a charity Wine Auction and Wine Tasting, Croquet: A Sport Story Exhibit, Collectible Car Show, Wicket Shoot, Community/Family Croquet, and a popular annual concert by the Toledo Symphony Concert Band, complete with Civil War era cannon, attracting 5,000 people!

The Hayes Golf Croquet Championship will be played at the Hayes President Center under World Croquet Federation golf croquet laws, beginning with a brief round of Waterford doubles to seed subsequent singles blocks in separate professional and amateur flights. A total purse of $1,500 is being guaranteed for the first three places of the Pro singles. The Amateurs in this event are all chosen from the new Hayes Presidential Center Croquet Club.

The Supersize Croquet National Championship will be played freestyle using modified Golf Croquet rules on three different roughly oval courses set in separate areas on the site, which comprises more than 25 acres of groves and lawns. The obstacles and variety of terrain and surfaces make the site an ideal one for the free-wheeling challenge of SuperSize Croquet, very much in the spirit of Extreme Croquet.

The Hayes Presidential Center is the first presidential library in the United States, and one of few that has never received Federal funds for its operation. It houses the records and memorabilia of the Rutherford B. Hayes administration (1877 – 1881). The Hayes library boasts a significant collection of genealogical materials. The Hayes Presidential Center also holds the Rendell Rhoades Collection, the largest collection of croquet books and memorabilia in the United States.

Fremont, with a population of 17,000 on the banks of the Sandusky River, just 20 miles south of the shores of Lake Erie, set amidst soybean, wheat, and corn fields, is in many ways a typical mid-American town. Many aspects of the local culture are integrated with the four-day tournament schedule, making it a uniquely memorable event for visiting players and their guests.

Visitors will also have the satisfaction of helping one of the USCA’s newest and most unusual clubs take strong root in this small Midwestern town, on “invisible” courts adjacent to the Hayes Home on grounds state-mandated to be maintained in appearance consistent with the historical period of the Hayes administration.

The croquet events are organized and managed by Mike Orgill, Bob Alman, and Don Oakley, whose Croquet Store is an equipment sponsor of the event, along with key members of the Hayes Presidential Center Croquet Club, which in its first season has grown to nearly 50 members.

For the purposes of this first-time event, the organizers have declared that a Croquet Pro is a USCA member with knowledge of the WCF Laws of Golf Croquet. A maximum sign-up of 16 pros will be considered, within those guidlines.
